Internet Safety
1. For my article of choice I read President Hinckley’s talk on the media entitled, “Opposing Evil”.
2. I watched a video on cyber bullying, on a revolution on social and classroom life, as well as some other videos of people’s personal stories relating to online relationships and virtual realities.
3. What I learned most from this activity is how involved students are in the media and how much access they have to harmful, unsafe material. I also enjoyed the talks by many of our church leaders who give great suggestions of how to avoid harmful media. I like that they talk about prevention instead of repairing. I realized that you have to start very young in teaching children the importance of creating plans for how to address dangerous situations when they come up.
4. The person I talked to was in his teens. He surprisingly didn’t know much about any of the things we talked about. He hadn’t heard of cyber bullying and didn’t know of anyone who has ever had an online relationship. This person seemed to think it was funny that we were talking about this stuff and even felt a little uncomfortable with the topic. I think this person will hopefully have a better understanding of what is really out there so that if he is ever confronted with it, he’ll know of the dangers associated with such.
